What Is Art City Austin?
2019 marks the 69th year of Art City Austin - the 2nd oldest outdoor event in Austin. Each year, the event showcases a highly curated selection of local and visiting visual artists exhibiting at an annual community festival. The event is supported in part by the City of Austin Cultural Arts Division and the Austin Convention Center Department.
Art City Austin offers diverse, thought provoking, entertaining, and powerful programming - featuring experiences created by local and national artists, museum and gallery curators, local art collectives, musicians, chefs, and community organizations.
Art City Austin began as “Art Mart” in 1950 at City Coliseum currently known now as the Palmer Events Center. It moved to Laguna Gloria in 1957 - rebranded as “Fiesta” and became a fundraiser for Laguna Gloria, and eventually the Austin Museum of Art. In 2000, Mayor Kirk Watson requested the festival be moved downtown to help revitalize downtown. So from 2009-2015, the festival was held along Cesar Chavez near City Hall.
In 2016 Art City Austin came full circle relocating to the site of its original home - the new Palmer Events Center. Paying homage to its Fiesta roots, in 2018, the event was re-established as an art block party where the Austin community could connect with 120 dynamic artists in a variety of genres at the annual art market.
In 2019, Art Alliance Austin will move the festival back into the heart of the city - to the newly renovated Republic Square. The year's event will focus on Art Alliance Austin's goals of disrupting how our community view and interacts with art. It will also be expanded with additional weekend events and new experiences guests are sure to remember.
See what we've got in store for this year's Art City Austin Festival!
